Vázquez Montalbán, Manuel
- Vázquez Montalbán, Manuel
b. 1939, Barcelona
Writer
Vázquez Montalban is one of the most prolific, and at the same time, most highly regarded writers in contemporary Spain. Though he has cultivated "popular" genres like detective fiction, he has done so at a level of complexity and sophistication which takes his novels beyond the conventions of the crime mystery and turns them into a sharp-edged and witty commentary on contemporary society. Perhaps his best-known work is the series of novels featuring the detective Pepe Carvalho, where the interest focuses less on solving the crime than on Carvalho's observations on the society he sees around him.
A former member of the Catalan United Socialist Party (the communist PSUC), Vázquez Montalban began his writing career as a journalist in the 1960s. His varied output, embracing novels, essays, books on gastronomy and political memoirs, has won him various prizes. His novel Los mares del sur (South Seas) (1979) won the Planeta Prize, Galíndez won the Europa Prize in 1992, and El estrangulador (The Strangler) (1995) the Critics" Prize. His work as a whole was honoured by the award of the National Literature Prize in 1995.
